diwan awards

Beyond a ceremony that has proven its legitimacy and effectiveness, and which at each edition brings an intensity of knowledge, exchanges, emotion, the Diwan Awards are increasingly positioning themselves as an exemplary social enterprise dedicated to taking into account all the talents that make up a human society, in line with the multicultural challenges of its time.

More than 21,400 voters this year expressed, through their votes for the exemplary representatives of each category, their aspiration to count in this society turned towards hope and the future. Among them, there are 68% women and 34% "Belgo-Belgians" (an increase of 13% compared to 2017). The list of winners has also become largely feminized this year, with nearly 50% of winners being women.

Another revealing indicator of the votes is the more active participation of professional groups, federations, but also networks of colleagues to salute the quality and promote their profession or their commitment, and a person they consider remarkable in their activity. Finally, from year to year, the Diwan Awards also reflect the rich diversity of Belgian-Moroccans, who also represent the diversity of the three regions of the country, Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels.

In six years, the event has become a benchmark event in terms of promoting an audience that is still too often the victim of prejudices and obstacles to its recognition. It proves that in its reality, the Belgian-Moroccan community produces many quality women and men, who are levers in terms of building the country where they were born, responsible citizenship, and influence among younger generations.

They shine in large companies, in cutting-edge medicine, in societal investment, in legal expertise, in sport (two world champions this year and an organization promoting sport for peace, which received the support of His Majesty the King), in dance, literature or entertainment...

They are bearers of economic projects or concrete actors in society. They are doubtless ordinary women and men but who, through hard work and faith in the future, achieve extraordinary things for Belgian society. In this respect, the success of the invitation extended to young people from different schools in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels shows to what extent young people (4th or even 5th generation from Moroccan immigration) aspire to find and meet examples, role models who help them to integrate into working life, to make their professional project and their commitment flourish. 250 of them, aged 15 to 18, were present in the room, invited in the same way as the 900 people present that evening. And they represent the ferment of a new project that aims to activate relations between the nominees for the Diwan Awards for six years (there are 201 of them to have been selected by the public, in six years) and the new generation, in the form of benevolent coaching, sponsorships, construction of a network useful for their future.

The success of the Diwan Awards is due to this new realization of its objective, to make too many invisible talents visible, and to promote the action and involvement of diversity in national society. This influence is also realized by a positive export of this valorization in our neighboring countries. Today, the Diwan Awards are also organized in Germany, France and the Netherlands, and respond locally to identical issues of recognition of a population that acts and rises to the civic challenges of its country.

For all those who attend, and especially this year, the Diwan Awards ceremony is an exceptional and emotional moment. The event allows everyone to measure the progress made since the arrival of the first "immigrant" workers in Belgium, and to pay tribute to the parents and grandparents who wanted a better future and especially the integration of their children, through hard work, studies, and affection for the country where they were born and grew up. Multiple in the talents it celebrates, intergenerational and a reflection of today's Belgium through the message it carries and the public it reaches, international through the influence of its model, exemplary on a societal level through all the institutions, companies and media that support it, the Diwan Awards event does a little more with each edition, advancing our society through the recognition, legitimization and motivation of one of its populations most actively involved in its progress.
